I’m completely taken with the idea of an alternative Victorian Age, of billowing clouds of steam, airships and mad inventors (rather than the real life Victorian age of poverty and covered table legs!).
My Steampunk Jewelry began to sell slowly on Etsy, along with my Husbands Art (he uses London and Victorian Silhouette Art in a lot of his imagery so its in keeping with my jewelry). Things were slowly ticking over with weekly sales but I had absolutely no idea how things would take off in the run up to Christmas, with my sales trebling!
If you’re a fellow craftsperson and new to Etsy then I wholly recommend you have adequate packaging ready. I think recycling is vital and make a concerted effort to keep wasteful packaging to a minimum, but when your trying to get up to ten packages ready to ship at the same time – making boxes out of old Amazon packages can get weary!
I think a lot of new seller in a similar situation to mine, I saw one Etsy Seller who ended up selling around 1000 novelty soap products in a day! I can only imagine what her house must have looked like! And then there are those frosty looks from the other customers in the line at the Post Office – it seems the Christmas spirit can thaw temporarily in those endless lines!
I think part of reason that I have had such a hectic time with my online store is the way that Steampunk has really taken off and crossed over into the mainstream.
From something that was once a niche, it’s branched out and now a lot more people have become aware of the unique and inventive crafters who are making such fantastic Steampunk wares.
So this may have been a Steampunk Jewelry Nightmare before Christmas for me – but its one I would gladly repeat.
Next year I will be prepared!
