Brass, which is often a key element in Steampunk Jewelry, looks lovely but can be a bit of a trick when it comes to wear.
With direct contact copper and brass (an alloy which contains copper) can react to skin, sweat and moisture, the resulting green or black patina can leave its mark (on you).
If you wish to indulge in Steampunk Fashion without suffering the brass reaction there are several things you can do to avoid going green.

1. Choose Steampunk Jewelry where the brass elements do not contact the skin. By using a base of sterling silver or fabric you can create a barrier between the brass elements that adorn you and your lovely self.

2. Another option is to seal the area on your beloved Steampunk Jewelry that contacts the skin with a couple of coats of clear nail varnish. Note: this can wear off over time and may need to be reapplied in future.

3. What about that brass chain or ring? Keep your Jewelry and skin clean, limit wear, and a light dusting of powder helps.

More severe reactions could be a sign of an allergy and you may need to consult your doctor.

With a bit of foresight and a few precautions you can sport your Steampunk Accessories to your hearts content.
