Does Steampunk Jewelry work as a perfect Valentines Day gift?
Of course it does.
And I will tell you exactly why.

Yes, its close to that time of year again when couples rack their brains to come up with thoughtful and romantic gifts for each other. And London Particulars is all over it!

Simply fire up your submarines and have a romantic chase below the waves. You could meet under the shadow of a leviathan and wave to each other. If submarines are not for you, or just downright impractical, then you could always celebrate Valentines with a playful duel. At midnight, or under a scarlet dawn. I wrote about The Woman in Black last April and my experiences with the play and anticipation for the film.

Well, the wait is almost over as the movie is released this week.

While there is nothing remotely Steampunk about The Woman in Black, if you have a delight of the gothic, strange or uncanny, then this film should be perfect for you. And as mentioned in my last post, if you get a chance to see the play in Covent Garden then go! I got a great deal at the half-price ticket booth in Leicester Square and had a fantastically frightening afternoon.

The Woman in Black is a very dark tale in the style of Victorian Ghost Stories and the book scared the living daylights out of me, the play even more so.

If you are faint of heart then you may wish to imbibe a healthy dose of brandy or port before going to see this film. Or alternatively, wear blacked out spectacles and take an iPod with you.

From watching the trailers, the film is looking very promising. I still don’t know what to make of Daniel Radcliffe as an actor, beyond Harry Potter. But I think its interesting that he decided to go for a film which is such a great story and not the most commercial of scripts.

The concept of a Steampunk Laptop or PC is not new, but it’s always fun to see new designs and the latest creations in Neo Victorian electronics.

I just love this laptop. It’s a fully working piece of Neo-Victorian art.

It would be perfect for composing Steampunk novels and Penny Dreadfuls, although I’d have to make a point of writing my stories by night as the backlighting looks absolutely fantastic.

This One-of-a-kind Steampunk Ring is made from antiqued brass and is adjustable for sizes 7-10. Naturally, if your finger is smaller, you can contact me and I will be more than happy to adjust the piece for you.

A Steamy Steampunk marvel in Silver and Dark Blue tones. This Steampunk Ring was crafted using Vintage Ruby-Jeweled Watch Movements embellished with gorgeous Dark Montana Blue Swarovski Crystals.
Like most of my Rings, this one is adjustable and is formed from high quality silver-plated stamped brass filigree.

I’ll be making a new video of my Steampunk Rings in the near future as I seek to revamp this website.

In-between waiting for Bioshock Infinite and slaying the last few dragons in Skyrim, there doesn’t seem to be much coming out in the way of video games.

And then I spotted Black Gold Online.

As you can see, there are strong Steampunk elements in the graphics. The game sounds intriguing; two rival factions competing, technologists versus Nature Lovers.

A very Happy New Year!

Well, this is it – the big one. 2012. I for one will be ensuring my hip flask is full to the brim with Brandy on the 21st December and my trusty revolver is oiled and ready.

Just in case.

But before that apocalyptic date where hopefully nothing much will happen, I plan to make a lot of new Steampunk Jewelry.

And redesign this blog a little. With a few additions to existing pages and new videos and whatnot.

Before this, I thought I’d share three brand new items of Steampunk Jewelry, a new Ring, sparkly Red Earrings and a Steampunk Necklace of Emerald-Green hue.

This Steampunk Ring was created using Black Diamond Swarovski Crystals lovingly embedded upon a Vintage Ruby Jeweled Watch Movement and set upon a silver-plated brass adjustable ring.

These Steampunk Earrings are designed to shine and glimmer with gorgeous Siam Red Swarovski Crystals and silver tones and gold accents. These intricately detailed earrings are silver-plated brass filigree which have been created using vintage tooling. Valentines day isn’t that far away…

This bold and gorgeous (well it is!) Steampunk Necklace has been crafted using a particularly beautiful vintage clockwork with Emerald-Green Swarovski Crystals. The necklace is suspended upon an 18 inch silver-plated cable chain. As ever, if you would like adjustments please feel free to contact me.

A very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays or whatever festive seasonal greeting is your preference at this time of year.

I just wanted to say a huge thank-you to everyone who has visited this Steampunk Jewelry site and “liked” and retweeted and Google +’d my posts – its really appreciated.

And many, many thanks to everyone who has gotten in touch, its always inspiring to receive feedback.

This has been a fantastic year for London Particulars and I can’t quite believe how many Steamunk Jewelry rings, cufflinks, necklaces and bracelets have winged their way out of my shop this season.

I’m still making new pieces (as shown in this post) and will be working to replenish the supplies in my Etsy shop. Inbetween opening gifts and boxing things on Boxing Day…

This suitably Steamy Steampunk Necklace was created using a fantastically detailed Vintage Watch Movement and Emerald-Green Swarokski Crystals. The Watch Movement measures 19mm in diameter and is bailed and suspended upon an eighteen inch Silver-Plated Cable Chain.

This Steampunk Bracelet is very feminine and at the same time, slightly industrial.

Origins

Do you know the real origins of the term Black Friday?

Below you will find a rather mysterious account of how Black Friday got its name and three pictures of my new pieces of Neo-Victorian Jewelry. Including a pair of rather lovely necklaces and a Steampunk Ring.

Please note – these pictures have very little to do with the text which proceeds…

Black Friday

So I was intrigued to find out where the origins of Black Friday comes from.

Naturally you will find all sorts of information if you visit Wikipedia, but I tend to get a lot of my information from a Psychic who operates above a Lawnmower Repair Shop in the centre of London.

As you might guess, there is more demand for Psychic Readings than there are for lawn tidying in the great metropolis.

Anyway, Mrs. Wizzington (the Psychic in question) revealed the true origins of Black Friday and only charged me fifty quid.

Here’s a picture of a Steampunk Ring before I continue:

OK. So holding her frail and veiny hand, I waited as Mrs. Wizzington consulted her collection of shrew-skulls and drunk her customary three mugs of gin and port.

As the day darkened, she began to hum a rather melodious refrain before revealing that the real Black Friday happened when someone in London misplaced the Sun in 1832.

The Missing Sun

Yes, the Sun literally went missing for fifteen hours and everyone in the City was horrified. I imagine the people in the countryside were equally dismayed and perplexed.

That is the first part of how we ended up with Black Friday. But add to this the fact that the Dead decided that the prevailing darkness was a great time to go upside from their catacombs and crypts and as you can imagine, it was total chaos…

Made worse by the swarm of bats which soared up thinking it was night and started a terrible aerial war with a particularity large murder of crows.

Anyway, in the abysmal madness which ensued, the people of London made a dash indoors, wherever those doors led too. Most of those in the centre of the City led to places of commerce.

Drink and Shop

Pubs and Shops did a brisk trade that dark day as unscrupulous shopkeepers gave the terrified throng the choice of buying something, or being forced out into the streets and the swirling madness of the “Black Friday”.

And hence the term was born.

Some of this might tale might not be wholly factual. But if it isn’t, you need to take it up with Mrs. Wizzington and not me.

And in the meantime, Happy Thanksgiving for those of you who celebrate and a very Happy Black Friday for those of you who do and don’t.

The other day I was glancing over my Etsy Shop London Particulars, to make sure everything was as it should be (it was) and none of my Steampunk Jewelry pieces had taken wing and flown (they hadn’t).

And then I noticed how many admirers the shop has got.

6,500!

Wow!

And a most hardy Huzzah!

That’s really inspiring to see.

Any creative endevour can be a little bit unnerving when it comes to crunch time and putting your “stuff” out there, i.e. online.

And when I first uploaded my Steampunk Jewelry to Etsy back in June 2008, I was really nervous.

But it didn’t take long for people to come visiting and buying and since then I’ve got to know lots of really nice people.

And a lot of you really nice people have become repeat customers which I really appreciate.

So I just wanted to say a big Thank-You to all 6,500 of you in one blog post. Or whatever the number has changed to since typing…

Its a good break to emerge from my Steampunk Workshop/Cave to write a post.

Most of my days have been spent in the company of watch movements.

There’s plenty of new items appearing every day.

I’m trying to keep the shop as fully stocked as I can during the Holidays.

Its a challenge as the Steampunk Jewelry is flying out of London Particulars in a dizzying rush of activity.

So whenever I can, I’ll preview new pieces so you can see them before they’re uploaded to my Etsy Shop, that way you can snap anything up which takes your fancy.

Happy Samhain, All Hallows Eve, Halloween…

May your day and dusk be full of good spirits (or malevolent ones if you’re drawn to the dark side)!

I woke this morning to my own curious, ominously strange Halloween Event…

I was looking through my Steampunk Jewelry Shop London Particulars, noting items which need to be renewed or edited when I spotted the “Professor Thistlequick in Pursuit of Happiness” print.

The colors, orange and black, seemed perfectly fitting for Halloween.

But as I was about to relist the artwork in my shop, my eyes were drawn to the number of viewings…
666.

666 views. 18 Admirers (6+6+6 = 18).

Scary eh!

Although this is perfectly in keeping for Halloween, I’m hoping to get a 667 view on the print before nightfall.

If that doesn’t happen I shall avoid the windows, puddles and pools of water and especially mirrors (as well as quenching the candles before the mirrors).
Perhaps I’ll spend the dusk and night hidden beneath my bed under a blanket of garlic bulbs with my trusty Steampunk Shotgun and a few Silver Bullets…

Once again it seems Guy Ritchie has made a Sherlock Holmes Moving Picture which bears about as much resemblance to Conan Doyle’s books as a Top Hat bears to a Catfish.

Still, it looks fantastic with Steampunk tones, darkly lavish sets, amazing locations and a hansom cab full of ham. After my former rantings aimed at the last Sherlock Holmes offering by Mr. Ritchie, I finally bit the bullet, went to see it and loved it.

And Professor Moriarty definitely looks interesting. Far more so than the Moriarty of the BBC’s recent Sherlock, which asides from the needlessly camp Moriarty, was superb.

I’m sure there are plenty of Holmesians who will be skulking in their drawing rooms this December, weeping with anger into glasses of brandy at this celluloid outrage and in some ways I commiserate.

But sadly it won’t stop me going to see this nonsense and poppycock; it just looks like too much fun!

As well as the brand new Steampunk Necklaces I added to London Particulars recently, I’ve just made a new line of Steampunk Earrings.

I love making Earrings, or Gearrings if you will, the clockwork pieces perfectly compliment people’s ears. Even if those ears aren’t silver. In fact I find all ears, no matter thier size hue or color, perfectly compliment the earrings. Yes, it really is the other way round – your ears will compliment the earrings.

And thankfully, none of the Vintage Watch Movements I use in my Steampunk Jewelry actually move. The Tick and Tock of Time in a person’s ear might send them fruit loops.
Although it has to be said, I’ve noted that Steampunks seem to have a much stronger mental constitution than most.

I just found this video from the New York Comic Con. This Giant Steampunk Hand took about six months to make. And it weighs around 15 pounds…

I wonder if this gentleman plays soccer? He would make an excellent goal-keeper. Or perhaps Baseball would be more fitting.

And the fact he can give people the finger (although a Gentleman would never in reality do such a thing) is the icing on this rather strange cake…

Halloween is creeping and crawling and slithering towards us.

In keeping with the deliciously gray, autumnal drear, I was looking at Steampunk Halloween ideas for the Masquerade party I’m going to.

And I found this video. And I thought it looked pretty scary!

Sadly, it’s a fair trip from Seattle to New York, but if I was in New York, I’d definitely be going to the Steampunk Haunted House.

It looks absolutely terrifying!

I love the fact that they’ve incorporated Lewis Carroll into the experience. I already find his worlds pretty disturbing for the most part (as long as you take the Tim Burton film out of the equation, or specifically Johnny Depp’s fuderwhack dance – urgh).

Moving on from that Disney induced horror, who wouldn’t want to be thrust into a “into a beautiful and terrifying dreamscape of neo-Victorian elegance and phantasmagoric clockwork horrors”

The playhouse where the experience takes place sounds both fascinating and creepy with its three floors of “innumerable twisting hallways, looming balconies, and labyrinthine cellars.”

This definitely sounds like a great way for Steampunks and lovers of both the Gothic and Neo-Victorian to celebrate Halloween.

A Steampunk Octopus… what could be better? I’ve been waiting (like a lot of people), for the Squids and Octopuses to take to the land. An invasion is surely only a matter of time. But I never expected it would be a Steampunk Octopus which would be the first to roam.

This is a really cool video, uploaded from Mark Day who we featured on this blog along with his Edwardian Ball Video, earlier this year.

And finally the arch enemy of Dr. Who is back and this time it’s been prowling around the Burning Man Festival. There are no statistics on the amounts of exterminations which took place…

I was looking through sales of my Steampunk Jewelry over at London Particulars and reading through the feedback and I’m really grateful to everyone who bought from me since 2008!

It’s still hard to believe I’ve been making and selling these pieces for so long now! And I still feel a thrill when I look at a pile of watch movements and try to figure out how to conjure them into something new. And pretty. Or tarnished and battered and weathered – pieces for Steampunk Adventurers…

So, back to the feedback! People have left lovely comments. It’s so rewarding when you make something out of nothing (OK, watch movements, Swarovski crystals and stampings plus secret ingredients), sell it and then realize that some of the pieces are for peoples anniversaries, birthdays and Christmases. And Fathers and Mothers days, Easters and Halloweens.

I’ve even made Steampunk Cufflinks for Steampunk Weddings and that is a real thrill!

Anyway, I just wanted to post this to say thank you to all of my loyal customers and to all future customers as well.

There are some amazing features and it’s well worth watching all the way through, especially for the mini feature 7 Great Things That Are Better Steampunk’d – I love that Steampunk Darth Vader!

Thelomeris certainly looks promising!

While this new Hungarian film is not Steampunk in its purest essence (if such a thing exists) it certainly has a lot of Steampunk reference points and aesthetics.
The trailer reminds me of Dark City and looks just as strange and brooding.

Here’s a snippet from the promotional material:

I wrote about the Woman in Black and my experiences with this deliciously Gothic Victorian story before.

Above is a new trailer which shows a little more from the upcoming film.

I have to say it looks amazing but I’m slightly puzzled by the girl’s accent as she reads a poem over the trailer. The film should be set in the North of England and I hope they haven’t relocated it to America as its setting so was so integral to the plot.

Either way, the visuals looks fantastically creepy. I recommend you read the book, or see the play in London ahead of the film as it looks like they’ve added scenes which weren’t a part of the book.

I hope they haven’t strayed too far from the original story as it really is an amazing piece of modern Gothic fiction.

The Woman in Black is best read at night, in the wintertime before a crackling fire. Reading by candlelight improves the atmosphere, as does a generous measure of Port or Brandy to keep those Gothic terrors at bay…

Three Thousand pieces of Steampunk Jewelry have now winged their way out of my workshop, ticking and tocking and whirring and clicking their way around the world.

And I want to say a huge thank-you to all of my customers!

I can’t believe it’s been three years now since I opened London Particulars. I started making my Jewelry to compliment my husband’s Professor Thistlequick Artwork, which is based around Victorian Silhouette Illustrations and Whimsy. And as soon as I became immersed in the world of Steampunk, I fell in love with its aesthetic and the sheer abundance of creativity and oddity on show!

From 2008, I’ve watched Steampunk’s meteoric rise and its constant evolution. Anyone following me on Twitter and Facebook can see how many new fangled inventions there are appearing every day. I find as many as I can and love to share them! So if you’re not following me, click on the above links!
It will be fascinating to watch where Steampunk goes next…

We’re still due a proper bona fide Steampunk Movie. As recently lamented by yours truly, there has been efforts, there have been elements, but nothing full-blown as yet. Video Games seem to be where it’s at for Steampunk and because Hollywood has a tendency to recreate Video Games for the Big Screen (shouldn’t it be the other way round!), perhaps Bioshock Infinite or Dishonored will be appearing in the near future…

It’s going to be interesting to see where Steampunk goes next. And as ever, I’m constantly looking for new ways to create novel pieces of Steampunk Jewelry, so keep em’ peeled over at London Particulars.

Now this looks like an amazing Steampunk exhibit! Steampunk: History Beyond Imagination opens in October in Anaheim, CA but looks set to potentially travel (presumably by Zepplin)

“The exhibit will introduce visitors to an era in which science and industry were combined to launch mankind into the 20th Century (and beyond) – to become a world where ordinary human beings could do the impossible. Historical pioneers like Charles Babbage and prominent personalities like Nikola Tesla will also be revealed for their contributions to the development of incredible technological advances.”

I’m really looking forward to Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

I loved the first film even though I was apoplectic with fury when I first saw the trailer. As a sworn-in Sherlock Holmes aficionado, the sight of Robert Downey Jr. diving out of the Houses of Parliament like something out of an eighties action movie had me spluttering my port across the room.

Holmes wouldn’t dive like Batman! Holmes wouldn’t have intimate dealings with a woman, Holmes wasn’t known for his sense of humour!

Of course this was one of many liberties taken with the Sherlock Holmes works and I was convinced that Conan Doyle would be hammering his ancient knuckles on his coffin lid in an attempt to break out and challenge Guy Ritchie to a duel.

And as for some of the journeys across London, even a mockney like Ritchie should know the general layout of the city!

But then I saw the trailer, the Steampunk leanings of some of the set pieces, the amazing construction of Tower Bridge, the gorgeous grey swirls of London, the cinematography and the sheer Gothic pantomime evil of Lord Blackwood.

And I promised not to swear or say a word in the cinema and I reminded myself this had next to nothing to do with the books. And I loved it! Even bought the soundtrack (which is a fantastic body of music to listen to when writing Steampunk fiction!).

Game of Shadows looks just as ridiculous and just as promising. There are definitely leanings of Alan Moore’s League of extraordinary Gentlemen which can only be a good thing.

And there’s Moriarty – after the woeful portrayal of Moriarty in the otherwise excellent BBC update, fingers crossed this one’s better.

And there’s…Holmes in drag.

I’ve just created a new range of Steampunk Cufflinks and as I created them, I was thinking about the kinds of people that wear my cufflinks.

I know people getting married buy them (which is a real honor!) and as for the other customers, well I’m not so sure what walks of life they come from. Although I imagine they are known to say “Huzzah” and the like from time to time…

I love the idea that slowly and steadily, the world is becoming slightly more Steampunk and Sartorial. One step at a time with each pair of cufflinks which wings their way out of my shop, London Particulars.

It’s high time the world smartened up!

No more moping around in t-shirts and sloppily dressing for dinner.

It’s time to tidy up the Steampunk way!

I’ve mentioned before the idea of my Steampunk Cufflinks being worn in offices. Not only would this make a usually staid environment sparkle a little, I also see a further benefit… Imagine you’re at the water cooler, trying to get water (some people do) and the office bore approaches (every office has at least one) – by simply holding up your cuffs you can temporarily blind the bore with your shining cufflinks and make good your escape.

This is a far better distraction than a smoke bomb and far less conspicuous.

And there is the whole Transhumanist movement. These are people who readily pierce and prick themselves with all sorts of interesting body modifications. Noses, eyebrows and other more… private places. Why not wear Steampunk Cufflinks? Actually, perhaps surgically embedding cufflinks isn’t a good suggestion. Forget that…

Another area where I wouldn’t recommend my cufflinks is the military, at least not for operations under cover and in the theatre of conflict. The sun might shine on my cufflinks and give your position away, not a good idea…

But Sailors – Sailors would make ideal candidates for Steampunk Cufflinks. If you find yourself scuppered and out of flares, simply hold your cuffs up towards the mainland and anyone gazing out to sea is bound to see the flash of sunlight on Cufflink. These could be life savers…

Happy Steampunk Day! Yes, today is apparently Steampunk’s Birthday so it’s only fitting that we drink some Earl Gray Tea and have a slice of Victoria Sponge Cake in celebration.
Steampunk Day was initiated on Facebook of all places, by the group who are fittingly entitled International Steampunk Day.

So there you have it, if there was ever a day to lace up those corsets and strap on those Top-hats – it’s today!

There’s also good and bad news on this illustrious day for all things Steampunk. There has been excited chatter on Twitter that Bungie, makers of Halo, are bringing out a Steampunk Video Game, which would be jolly good news, but sadly it seems that this is not the case.

Steampunk video games have been few and far between, which is surprising for such a visual medium.

There are two games with Steampunk leanings which I’ve been aching to get my hands on, one is still a year off (Bioshock Infinite) and the other is out in a few days – hooray!

Alice: Madness Returns (see video above) is out on the 16th of this month and it looks absolutely incredible!

When I first heard that Tim Burton was going to make Alice in Wonderland I was thrilled. One of my favorite Directors (for his early films), filming one of my favorite books!

Huzzah indeed!

Until I went to see it… and was underwhelmed, to say the least.If there is ever an equivalent of tattoo-removal for the mind, then I will have that Johnny Depp dance (or Futterwack) scrubbed from my consciousness and sent to room 101.

OK, rant over.

American McGee, creator of Alice: Madness Returns is restoring Alice to where I think she should be, Victorian (no break dancing), Gothic, Dark, Surreal, Twisted and utterly Insane!

Alice: Madness Returns looks like a fast paced platform game with stunning art direction and fingers crossed the gameplay will match the graphics!

A few weeks ago Steampunk Jewelry featured the work of Tom Hardwidge and his fantastic Arthrobots. For those who have never heard of these rather nifty mechanisms, Arthrobots are a cross between arthropods and robots.

On my travels across the Interwebs, I look for anything bizarre, unique or simply distracting and was thrilled to find this time-lapse video which shows the construction of one of these wonderful pieces. I say it’s a time-lapse video but who knows, perhaps when he isn’t creating repurposed Arthropods, Tom is working in his lab fashioning new devices for the speeding up of time…

I think anyone with an interest in Steampunk and Upcycling will love these pieces. Tom kindly traded a golden grasshopper for a pair of Steampunk Cufflinks and its sitting on my bookshelf, guarding me from evil spirits and dust mites.

While this has absolutely nothing to do with Steampunk Jewelry, it does have a pocket-watch! And beetles. And a grave.

I love Erland and the Carnival; a great blend of music, eccentric, otherwordly and surreal. This video has a wonderfully gothic twist and is an excellent counterpoint to the happy ramblings of Spring and Summer worshippers. The seasons of light and life are fair enough, but Autumn and Winter are far more fitting for gothic pursuits.

I imagine a folly filled crossing of the Pennine Mountains at dusk and the eerie cacophony of the sculpture rising over the ridges.
It would definitely be a fumble for the hipflask and imbibe a shot of brandy moment…

Ive just added some new pieces of Steampunk Jewelry to my shop and I’m working on a range which will be previewed here in the near future.
I wanted to give you a preview of the new pieces before they fly off my Etsy shops virtual shelves!

So here, for your delectation is a silvery pair of Steampunk Cufflinks, a Mysterious Key Steampunk/Gothic Necklace and a new Purple and Topaz Steampunk Ring.

These rather spiffing Steampunk Cufflinks are made using Vintage Elgin Watch Movements and are perfectly matched. Its always a challenge finding a matching pair so these are one-of-a-kind, while also being two-of-a-kind.
If you see what I mean.

The Mysterious Key Necklace. Mysterious mainly because I have no idea what kind of door this opens. Or whether the door still exists. Or if it ever did… I love old, vintage keys for the questions they raise. I like to imagine huge black doors on the side of a suitably gothic mansion or boxes which should never be opened! At the very least, you have a new necklace and a conversation piece rolled into one!

Last but certainly not least, you have before your peepers a beautiful silver, purple and topaz Steampunk Ring! I hope you like the combination of colors; the topaz seems to work well against the vibrant purple Swarovski Crystals.

I love this short promotional video for the Steampunk Worlds Fair 2011! Stirling stuff with a rousing piece of music as well.

The Fair is taking place on May 20-22nd in Somerset New Jersey and looks like it shall be a thoroughly thrilling affair.

Entertainment includes; Happy Hour Burlesque with a sideshow of “questionable taste”, a Belly Dancer, The White Elephant Burlesque Society, Dr. Grymm’s Laboratories, Carnival Epsilon a classic sideshow who promise to “dance with danger and play with pain”, amongst many other wondrous sights and sounds.

Sadly I cannot make the fair… I live too far away and my Zeppelin has been decommissioned due to health and safety issues. The Government have been creating all manner of imperious, rigid laws concerning dirigibles and their upkeep of late.

Worse still, my Steam powered Jet-pack flew off when I carelessly set it down on my way home from the pub. There have been reports of it in the skies over Dover, England…

Ah, The Woman in Black…

Just typing the name gives me the shivers! While there’s nothing remotely Steampunk about this book/play/movie, anyone who has a love for the Victorian and the Gothic will love this story.

I first saw the Woman in Black at the Fortune Theater in Covent Garden, Central London. When I left the theater it’s fair to say I had the collywobbles!

The play is based on the 1983 book by Susan Hill. The story takes place in a small English town by the sea and is set in the wonderfully named “Eel March House”. The tale focuses on a young solicitor who is sent to the town of Crythin Gifford to deal with a reclusive widow’s effects.

What takes place in the spinster’s deserted house is truly chilling!  Almost every ghostly, gothic plot device is used and all to wonderful effect.

The play has a cast of two main leads, two actors recounting the tragic tale in an effort to exorcise the ghastly story. There is a third presence in the play, one who appears at the corner of your eyes, out of sight for most of the tale, slowly building the tension ever on towards its hideous climax.

The book is fantastic and a different experience to the Play. It’s well worth a read, especially on a dark winter’s night. While Susan Hill has written a number of crime novels, she has also written further ghost stories. None of them are as terrifying as the Woman in Black, but each carries their own ghostly charms.

If you can’t make it to London to see the play, as you can see from the above trailer, The Woman in Black is coming to the cinema. I’m not sure Daniel Radcliffe would have been my first choice to play the lead, Arthur Kipps, but his acting has slowly improved over the Harry Potter films, so fingers crossed!

The trailer certainly holds its own Goosebumps moments. Here’s hoping they capture the essence of The Woman in Black in all its horrific, dark Victorian glory!

I was busy reclining in my favourite smoking jacket while pondering the nature of marmalade when this video popped up on my portable Internet device.

Some people allude to being Chaps, holding doors open now and then for crooked old ladies and laying their coats across puddles for ducks and suchlike. But this man, well he has got the essence of Chapness and it looks like he makes it a full time pursuit!

I just made a new range of Steampunk Rings and thought I would offer you a preview. They’re now available in London Particulars and as mentioned previously, if these have sold out just let me know and I will make you some new Neo Victorian Rings! I cannot ever match any of these pieces as my Watch Movement Steampunk Jewelry is always unique but I may be able to make something similar.

This Steampunk Ring is a blend of a Gorgeous Silver Plated Filigree Ring with a Vintage Mohawk Watch Movement with Ruby Jewels. The soft silver tones of this piece were so gorgeous that I decided to leave it “plain” and unadorned with Swarovski Crystals.

This rather wonderful piece of Steamy Green Goodness was fashioned with a Vintage Swiss Ruby Jewelled Watch Movement set upon intricate and subtle filigree. The Green Goodness of the piece comes from the four Emerald-Green Swarovski Crystals set into the piece.

This Steampunk Ring is one of my homage’s to Horological Collage Cog and Gear Designs.
This piece is made with Vintage Watch Movements which I have arranged to make this unique design. The Gears really pop out against the black bevel.
The Ring itself is Silver Plated Brass and frames the Watch Movements nicely with the Silver and Brass cogs contrasting with the deep black and soft silver colors.

Steampunk Jewelry in shades of green. Now why would that be? Could it have anything to do with the impending St Patrick’s Day? Yes and in celebration I’ve made sure there is plenty of Guinness chilling in the fridge and dug out my nicest Green Steampunk Rings to set my fingers ablaze with Emeralds and Clockwork.

Upon swotting up on Wikipedia, I discovered an interesting fact; the color originally associated with St Patrick’s Day was blue.
I could give you more hastily rewritten facts from Wikipedia but that would be dull.

So what is the Steampunk tie in, asides from these gorgeous Green bejeweled lovelies you see before you? Well not much, but I’ve assembled some St Patrick’s Day facts which will interest those of you of a Neo Victorian persuasion.

Please note that some (if not all) of these facts may reside in a slightly different reality to the one we are currently parked in.

The resolutely Victorian Charles Dickens celebrated St Patrick’s Day by dressing up his wife Catherine’s thirteen cats in emerald long johns. The cats were then coaxed into acting out a Tale of Two Cities; sometimes these performances could go on for upwards of ten hours.

Steampunk favorite H.G. Wells was known to commandeer Zeppelins and fly them “maniacally” over small villages, describing perfect shamrocks in the clouds.

One distant night, Jules Verne, author of “Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea” and his chums set out to their local farm and painted an entire field of onions “luminescent green”. You can only imagine the farmer’s bewilderment upon waking.

In a recent spell of tinkering I updated the London Particulars Fan Page. You may have noticed the badge on my site in the side bar and you may or may not have noticed that the badge is redesigned and looking rather spiffing!

I can’t take credit for this! In interviewing the Creator of Steampunk Insects, Spiders and rare and wonderful beauties, Tom Hardwidge, it also turned out that Tom creates and designs web graphics amongst other creative concerns. Tom kindly redesigned my Fan Badge for me which was really cool and we did a trade in Steampunk Cufflinks and Steampunk insects which I’m really excited about!

This is an absolutely gorgeously filmed Steampunk Influenced video by Director Christopher Alender, set to a beautifully melodic, melancholy and brooding song by the Musician and Composer Ben Lovett.

I wish the Director could make a full version of this film, its fantastic! It seems strange that there still hasn’t been a movie dedicated exclusively to Steampunk and while there are traces and Neo Victorian leanings in some recent movies, the genre seems rife for a full blown spectacular.

So I shall get to work right away on my own opus; a Lego Steampunk retelling of Bleak House featuring Jekyll and Hyde as Jarndyce and Jarndyce, a malfunctioning Charles Dickens and my cats who are game for anything.

Or perhaps not.

As mentioned in last week’s Steampunk Jewelry Preview, I’m in the process of making some new pieces of Jewelry.

Here are three brand new Steampunk Butterfly Pendants which are winging their way into London Particulars over the next few days.

The Butterflies started out as tiny eggs, bright white and encrusted with minuscule, vivid crystals. By their colors I knew how each butterfly would eventually emerge.

The next stage was the larva, there was a lot of wriggling about on my work desk and I had to be quick to catch the tiny creatures. Butterfly Larva can squirm with surprising speed, but when they have cog and watch movements they are lightning-fast!

The pupa stage was simple; I placed a stick over my desk and let them do their thing, hanging like bats upon the branch. Inside each of the cocoons I could hear ticking and tocking and as the sounds increased, I realized they were going to emerge.

Finally my Steampunk Butterflies were born, fluttering around the room in a cacophony of clattering wings. After they have finished flapping and settled down, they gently froze in time and were transformed into stunning Steampunk Necklaces.

The Goldfish Helmet film from the Edwardian Ball was featured on Steampunk Jewelry a couple of weeks ago. I was thrilled to be contacted by the Film Maker Mark Day with news of an extended and more elaborate production from this Edwardian Extravaganza.

Mark Day was kind enough to answer a few questions about his film which beautifully documents the Edwardian Ball. With elements of Steampunk, Neo Victorian, Gothic, Carnival, Edward Gorey and the strange, bearded and unusual, this a fascinating short film.

Six Questions with Mark Day

What led you to the Edwardian Ball?

I’ve been filming performances by the Vau de Vire Society since last summer.  I first saw them at an event called Sand by the Ton, where they did a spectacular out-door performance.  Since then I’ve been lucky enough to be invited to film them regularly, and as they are co-presenters of the Edwardian Ball.  So along I went….

There are a lot of Steampunk Elements at play in your film, is Steampunk a fairly recent phenomenon at the Edwardian Ball?

As it’s the first one I’ve attended, I really couldn’t say.  Although galleries of previous events on Flikr seem to suggest a high concentration of brass-goggles on top hats.

Your film captures a lot of oddities at the Ball, which made the biggest impression on you?

The fashion is fun, and I really did not see many people at all who had not made at least a bit of an effort. But for me, it’s really the performances.  There’s something powerful about seeing people do something visually spectacular, live.  Obviously I’m thinking about how it’s going to look, and framing things that I can work with later when I edit.  But I still get the “wow” factor.  The video I shot really only offers a glimpse of the Edwin Gorey inspired Va de Vire theatrical piece (from about 5:29 into the video)  And Fou Fou Ha (from about 6:23) there’s just a glimpse of them — I wasn’t in the best position to shoot them.  But they make me laugh a lot.

I spotted a lot of beards in this video, did you ever worry you may have been overwhelmed by them?

The last shot in the video is me, sporting a beard and waxed-moustache which have both since been removed, much to my wife’s relief.  So I think I pretty much held my own on the beard front. I did shoot a video on “how to wax a moustache” before I shaved it off, which I will be posting shortly.

Your short film is really well shot and produced; do you have a background in film-making?

Not really, I’m a self-taught hobbyist. I started out editing footage I’d shot with a camcorder at Burning Man.  After several years of going, filming, then basically making the same video over and over, I got reasonably good at putting a montage together.  I got into DSLR video in 2010, which lets you use DSLR lenses to film, and gives you more of that shallow-deth-of-field “film look”.

Where can people of good taste, wit and intelligence find more examples of your work?

My more “polished” videos are at markdaycomedy although I also post shorter “out-take” videos at markdayresponse. The Vau de Vire Society and  Bohemian Carnival videos would also be a good place to start.

The rise and spread of Steampunk influences continues and for that, I most definitely doff my hat and twirl my swordstick.

This video is a veritable cornucopia of Steampunk, Gothic and Neo-Victorian delights! The video is for the intriguingly titled “The Ballad of Mona Lisa” by Panic! At the Disco and the props, wardrobe and background actors were contributed by The L.A. based League of S.T.E.A.M.

You will see many Steampunk Wonders in this short moving picture and some very well maintained beards and mustaches!

As you may have noticed my Steampunk Jewelry shop is getting a little low in items. After Christmas, I was expecting sales to slow and they have done the opposite. January was an amazing month and with Valentine’s Day coming I’ve been selling a lot of Steampunk Cufflinks (for him) and a lot of Red Neo Victorian Necklaces (for her) as well as Steampunk Rings (for him, her and it!).

I’m in the process of making a whole new range of Jewelry and this will be posted to London Particulars over the next few days. A lot of people contact me via this website asking for specific pieces which are shown in the Blog posts and these have often sold by the time they’re shown here. So I’ve decided to start to preview my new work on this site before it arrives in my Etsy shop!

This is a wonderful piece of footage from the Edwardian Ball, I just love this costume! In the background you can also see all sorts of strange and bizarre sights. It’s like something from a Sci-fi film (set in the past naturally) and is completely fascinating and quite beguiling.

The Edwardian Ball sounds fantastic. Sadly I have not attended but I’ll definitely be looking into 2012. Looking at their website, it’s a celebration of all things whimsical, including fashion, circus, art, music and theatre and a celebration of the works of Edward Gorey. It even has the blessing of the Edward Gorey Chartitable Trust and anything Gorey-esque gets big thumbs up for me. Despite being Edwardian, there is clearly a Neo Victorian and Steampunk crossover and seems to be festival of the Gothic and peculiar and all the good stuff…

I wonder if the way the man with the bowl helmet keeps turning this way and that as he threads his way through the crowd is done for comic effect/to show off his outfit or if he has forgotten where he’s going as he has…the memory of a goldfish. Sorry!

I’m really thrilled to announce one of my Steampunk Necklaces; the emerald-green Scarab Watch Movement necklace (as shown above) has been featured in the latest edition of Gothic Beauty Magazine! The piece was chosen as one of the Staff Picks and it’s wonderful to see my jewelry in such a cool magazine.

It’s always inspiring to see your work featured in print form, as well as online. London Particulars was part of a really cool feature in the UK’s Bizarre Magazine Steampunk Special and my jewelry has also been shown in a number of different online blogs, as well as a gallery.

I just spotted this beautiful animation being shown over at Coilhouse.

It’s a fantastic piece of work and it’s as poignant as it is imaginative. It’s strange to think how many objects there are sitting on the bottom of the sea and it’s nice to think they may be repurposed like the discarded watch movements I use in my Steampunk Jewelry. I often wonder about the people who would have worn the watches and where they are now, for the more vintage movements it’s sadly likely the owners have passed away.

I love the way the discarded trinkets in this animation have taken on a life of their own with the floating keys and other weird fishes (to quote Radiohead). If you like this short film then you can find another cool animation and more details over at Coilhouse.

As you may have noticed, I recently changed the theme of my Steampunk Jewelry blog. This is the third change since I set it up in 2008. My last theme, Gothic wasn’t a million miles from the new one, so I will forgive you if you don’t notice the changes! Gothic was a great theme in terms of being…gothic, but the theme’s functionality was limited and it was frustrating that my earlier posts weren’t being displayed. With a shock I noticed there are over a hundred and forty posts on this website since its inception!

So with the dawning of the New Year I decided to revamp my Steampunk Jewelry site and voila – here you have it, the all new look which might look a little like the old look! It’s very minimal and crisply white like a fall of wintry snow and I hope it will make my Jewelry photography stand out even more.

I recently made some new Steampunk Jewelry pieces to replenish my shop, ransacked as it was by a horde of keen-as-mustard Christmas shoppers. Indeed, I am still crafting new pieces but thought I would take a moment to share this new Neo Victorian ring.

It’s been a wonderful year for sales of my Steampunk Jewelry and I’ve been in the really fortunate position of sending my work out to so many people from all over the world! When I look at some of the exotic locations which the jewelry has been shipped to, it makes me realize Steampunk is a truly worldwide phenomenon!

My shop is slowly being replenished after the avalanche of Christmas orders and I’m really looking forward to creating a whole new range of Steampunk Jewelry for 2011! The upcoming animation 1884 is back in the media with the news that the Director, Tim Ollive is collaborating with Terry Gilliam. I’m a big fan of Terry Gilliam’s work for the most part, but I hope he brings his genius vision to the project and leaves the usual chaos his films seem to descend into on the cutting room floor!

So many of his projects hold such promise! I’m thinking the Brothers Grimm, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and of course Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. However, they are always irritatingly flawed, asides from Tideland which I thought was pure (morbid) genius!

1884, in case you don’t know, is set at a time when Europe is at war and is a tale of “outstanding heroism in the face of deception, subterfuge and treachery”. The film is being seen by many as the first true “Steampunk Movie” (or moving-picture) with its steam-powered flying cars and rockets and men on the moon.

However it turns out, this is definitely going to be a very interesting film for fans of Steampunk and Neo Victorian Adventures!

A Steampunk Marvel from Dr. Boyer! This rather special box is said to be a “A Sure Cure For Melancholy and Lugubriousness”!

I love this Mysterious little box! I love the flair of the opening curtain (watch as it levitates before your very eyes!) and then the question of who is in the box… Could it be an imp? A djin? Or perhaps a tiny old lady with extra long fingers.  See that’s the great thing about boxes – they always get you wondering what’s in them and this one works magnificently!

The clockwork inside is a further marvel and feat of engineering and you can also get the plans to make your very own cure for Melancholy and Lugubriousness. As I’m up to my neck in crafting Steampunk Jewelry at the moment, I may just opt to take the lazy route and buy one if they ever become available.

So today, once the turkey has been defeated (I wrestle them on Thanksgiving) and the cranberries fired across the room from the slingshot I keep handy for holiday occasions, I shall get back to work on creating new Neo Victorian wonders.

Steampunk Jewelry is flying off my virtual shelves! Last year, around the time of the holidays my pieces were selling like the proverbial hot cakes but this year the sales are through the roof which is of course welcome news!

Just over this weekend along I have managed to amass 23 orders, which is fantastic, or to use a more fitting parlance, top hole!

Of course this means 23 packages to prepare, envelopes to print and those dreaded customs slips. I’m thinking that I need assistant, perhaps some sort of Steampunk helper, a bit like one of Santa’s elves (their real by the way, I saw one in a shopping mall once). This one would have pointed brass ears, eight steam-powered hands (on tentacles) and a serving hatch which would produce an everlasting array of cakes and the “finest wines known to humanity”.

Well here I am dreaming, best get packing!
