Steampunk Leviathan

There’s no doubt that Jules Verne’s 1869 tale “20,000 Leagues under the Sea” could be considered a Steampunk classic, along with the works of HG Wells. Quite what these authors would make of the term “Steampunk” is another thing altogether.

So I’m absolutely delighted to hear that one of my favorite Film Makers; David Fincher will be directing this Neo Victorian classic! I loved Seven, Fight Club and Zodiac and whilst they are in no way considered Steampunk they’re definitely dark classics.

When asked what the appeal of filming 20,000 Leagues hold for him, David Fincher responded “”You know, the idea of doing a gigantic Steampunk science fiction movie from 1873″

It’s surprising that so far there have been no out and out Steampunk blockbuster movies and whilst there have been many recent films with Neo Victorian leanings, no one has yet made a definitive Steampunk film – here’s hoping this will be the first of many!

Steampunk Mr. Potato Head

Almost every day there seems to be some fresh and new invention in the world of Steampunk, but never in my most feverish of dreams would I have considered a Steampunk Mr. Potato Head, yet he is here he is!

Mr. Potato Head has been around since 1952 in one form or another, but perhaps the maker, George Lerner, found the blueprints from 1852 in some sort of bizarre time capsule.

I’d love to see some more accessories made available for this Neo-Victorian Mr. Potato Head, perhaps a walking cane (or better yet, swordstick), a trusty revolver for more fiendish adventures, pocket watch and if he gets especially thirsty, a small hipflask of port or brandy.

Steampunk Boba Fett

Steampunk is continuously crossing boundaries and genres and it’s only natural that it’s found its way to Star Wars through the work of artist Greg Peltz.

I love this Steampunked Boba Fett, one of the more popular characters from the film which is weird considering what a minor role he had in the first films; it must have been that enigmatic mask, the strong silent bounty hunter…

As the artist points out, Boba is now clad in Neo Victorian coat and tails which may play havoc with his jet-pack. Other Steampunked characters on the artist’s site include Darth Vader in civil war attire, a dapper 3CPO and Chewbacca complete with monocle.

In dark times those who are ahead of the curve, particularly ladies and gentlemen of a Steampunk persuasion, will be preparing themselves for all eventualities.

Many folk are naturally concerned with portends concerning a full scale zombie apocalypse.

Whilst some may scoff, only the other day, I clearly saw the distinctive outline of a zombie hoard in my tea leaves.

Not only that, whilst dashing through collection of shopping emporiums (all under one roof) I could distinctly see the first signs of the brainless undead, peering absently and vacuously through windows at clothes and inanimate objects.

So what better way than for a Neo Victorian adventurer to kit themselves out for impending calamity than with this Steampunk Gun, the Liberator, fashioned by a gentleman with a wonderful moniker; Colonel J. Fizziwig…

If I had more shillings in my coffers I’d be highly tempted to secure this in the auction currently taking place on eBay. Alas, I cannot stretch to the sum being asked, being one thousand and five hundred pennies (or cents), not without selling more Steampunk Jewelry this month at any rate!

The keyboard is made from solid brass and antiquated leather and also includes genuine keys from the nineteen thirties/forties.

Imagine the sorts of novels you could conjure up using such a wonderful device and with some of the modded monitors and Steampunk USB sticks doing the rounds, you really could have some fully functioning Neo-Victorian marvels for your home office.

Whilst taking a short break from creating Steampunk Jewelry and traveling across the four corners of cyberspace, in search of wonders and adventure, I discovered a delightful emporium; Bo Press Miniature Books.

The artist, Patricia Sweet, designs and illustrates her own tiny books and binds them using traditional methods, a true artisan! The paper and leather covers come from all over the world and the content inside the books include old songs, imaginary maps and even tiny tomes regarding lizards!

The Aeronaut

This is one of my latest pieces of Steampunk Jewelry, comprising of a Vintage Watch Movement with a pair of Steamy Silver plated Brass Wings and a sixteen inch Antiqued cable chain in silver tones.

I named this piece The Aeronaut because I think it would be a perfect piece of intrepid explorers of the skyways and clouds. Indeed, it would almost be bad form to take to the skies without a suitable badge of office! Of course it may well attract the attention of sky pirates, but I would assume you will also be traveling with an armament or two…

Deep Crimson Steampunk Ring

I’m really pleased with how this Steampunk Ring turned out, it’s a study in scarlet (or perhaps crimson) and silver. The ring is made from a vintage Elgin oval seventeen ruby jeweled watch movement which I then set with nine deep Red Siam Swarovski Crystals.

One word of warning, if this Steampunk beauty is spotted upon your finger, it may attract the attention of a passing vampire, who may mistake the red crystals for drops or deepest red blood.

I recommend carrying a small bulb of garlic in your pocket, and if you can fit a stake into your other pocket then all will be well…

I just created a new Steampunk Cufflinks Video over on my YouTube channel, showcasing some of the new and old designs from London Particulars.

Cufflinks are definitely one of my biggest selling items and I tried to capture just some of the variation and uniqueness of the vintage pieces which I use for my Watch Movement Cufflinks.

Finding matching pairs, especially perfectly matched pieces is always a bit of a treasure hunt and I have to search through hundreds of vintage watch movements so I can pair the pieces. I love the challenge and when you do find the perfect pair it really pays off, although having mismatched pairs can work too, as long as there is symmetry in the designs.

Bizarre Magazine covers all bases from the strange and naturally bizarre, to fetish and all bases in-between. They ran a pretty in-depth and well thought out piece on the whole Steampunk genre and the model in this video was featured on the cover.

If you pause the video and really squint (ideally through a suitably Victorian telescope) and add a magnifying glass to the front of the telescope, then you will get a glimpse of my Steampunk Jewelry…

It’s almost as if a Victorian inventor, with a finger or two on some future pulse, conjured a picture of a future device, designed purely for fun and pleasure.

A device for children who seek a diversion away from kites, hoops and throwing stones at drudgers and pleasure boats from bridges overlooking the Thames.

And then this inventor took a time capsule and placed it deep within the ground and a century later, we find the first prototype of the Gameboy, a thing of bronze and cogs, a modern marvel!

The article was just published and it is gorgeous, the jewelry is modelled by the sultry and steamy Bad Charlotte of Model Mayhem.  She really liked the Steampunk Jewelry which was chosen for the shoot and the results are simply amazing!

Steampunk Jewelry – A Present From the Past

The world of Steampunk is beginning to emerge into the mainstream from the various, underground circles where it has long been a well-kept secret.

Steampunk fashion is now appearing on the catwalks and beginning to catch the eye of the media and it will be interesting to see if the whole movement will evolve or whether its followers will forsake it once it hits the high street.

There is so much to Steampunk, from the classic books of Jules Verne and HG Wells to the “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” Graphic Novels of Alan Moore, art, role playing games, clothes, but for me its Steampunk Jewelry that I love the most.

I have been making my own Jewelry for quite some time and have always been interested in vintage pieces, the remnants of yesteryear. So when I saw that there was a whole new way to reappropriate the past and give it a modern context, via Jewelry – I was in heaven!

As a main component, I’ll buy old watches and timepieces anywhere I can find them but the bulk of my material has come via the Internet. Over the past year the cost has been increasing as sellers realize that there is a market for vintage watches (broken at that) and instead of listing “Watches for repair or parts” they are now rebranding them as “Steampunk” and upping the prices.

I love to take these old timepieces apart and discover the treasures they contain.

A lot of the time, you find plastic workings from modern watches, but often when you find a watch that was made pre-sixties, you will find tiny rubies that are used as bearings because they are so resilient.

When you look at the workings of these old watches you can only marvel at the craftsmanship that has gone into making them. It is little wonder that all these intricate pieces have inspired another art form, Horological Collage, which uses watch parts to create pictures. This translates beautifully into Steampunk Art and some of my favourite pieces utilise this technique.

Once I have an abundant supply of vintage watch parts to fashion into Steampunk Jewelry, it’s simply a question of finding the best way to reappropriate the cogs and movements and it’s never long before inspiration strikes.

I love the fact that I’m giving something so skilfully made, which was sadly discarded as junk, a new life.

Surely that is the ultimate form of upcycling!

I love the quote where Sean describes Steampunk: “I like to call it the intersection of technology and romance, it’s a way of injecting some humanity back into modern life,”
I think that’s so true, there is a dark romance to Steampunk; it is a fantastical aside from our modern world of bland, mass-produced technology.
I try to achieve the same feelings with my Steampunk Jewelry and I hope my work stands out a little and conjures up impressions of somewhere else a little removed from the twenty-second century.

Steampunk Jewelry.
His name is Mike Libby and his website is the Insect Lab (link to follow) and he has been making all sorts of art, but these Insect pieces are just amazing.
Insects are his muse – to quote “Insects have always fascinated me and so does human technology, or maybe its more the need for humans to create and use technology that is more intriguing. Either way, the interest for me, and it is slightly a romantic interest, is combining two elements that are very opposite, yet compliment each other conceptually and visually.”
I find the same with the world of Steampunk and its inspiration from the Victorian Age, married with the Sci-Fi Technologies, which also inspire me to make my own Steampunk Jewelry and Art.
The Insects range from Arachnids to Butterflies and Mike actually uses dead specimens that he secures from scientific dealers from all over the world, from Africa to Brazil. Some insects he finds himself, such as Bumblebees or Dragonflies and he even invites people to send in their own specimens! For the gears, he uses antique pocket watches and wristwatches.
However these items are not cheap, it has to be said, my personal favourite the Orthoptera: Tropidacris Dux, a 5″ long Grasshopper made of steel, copper and brass gears, is $1200!

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, of course gets a mention, but so does “The Amazing Screw-On Head” – a very strange, hilarious comic and film by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.
There is also a predictably short film that is a mash-up of sound bytes with members of Abney Park and Evelyn Kriete and Voltaire.
Whilst there isn’t a great deal of material for long-term Steampunk fans, this is another sign that the whole genre is being brought into the mainstream.

With direct contact copper and brass (an alloy which contains copper) can react to skin, sweat and moisture, the resulting green or black patina can leave its mark (on you).
If you wish to indulge in Steampunk Fashion without suffering the brass reaction there are several things you can do to avoid going green.

1. Choose Steampunk Jewelry where the brass elements do not contact the skin. By using a base of sterling silver or fabric you can create a barrier between the brass elements that adorn you and your lovely self.

2. Another option is to seal the area on your beloved Steampunk Jewelry that contacts the skin with a couple of coats of clear nail varnish. Note: this can wear off over time and may need to be reapplied in future.

3. What about that brass chain or ring? Keep your Jewelry and skin clean, limit wear, and a light dusting of powder helps.

More severe reactions could be a sign of an allergy and you may need to consult your doctor.

With a bit of foresight and a few precautions you can sport your Steampunk Accessories to your hearts content.

A good point about the emergence of Steampunk Fashion comes from Voltaire (a renowned musician of all things Steampunk and Gothic) as he reveals that even Levi’s are jumping on the Bandwagon with a recent window dressing showing a pair of distressed jeans and an “old timey shirt and top-hat”.

It is fascinating that the genre has already crossed over to Hip Hop with the works of Dr Phineas Waldorf Steel, a man who has a profound message for the happiness starved masses “It all comes down to having fun. We spend our lives trapped, when all we really want to do is play. So, let the people play! Let us build a Utopian Playland.”

Whilst I have no doubt that the crossover for Steampunk from underground to Mainstream will alienate a few, it will bring more people and more ideas and that can be a good thing.

Although if Martha Stewart starts sporting Steampunk Jewelry and brass goggles in an attempt to hawk her magazines it may be time to pack up, board the air ships and fly to quieter climes.

Mr Suekichi has been making his own watches from scratch (including the watch parts themselves) for close to thirteen years now and the skill and finesse in his work really stands out.
As someone who makes their own Steampunk Jewelry – I found it inspirational that his initial attempts to flog his wares in the fleapits paid off in such a big way!

Of the 7000 watches, one was made for a man with one arm and since making this customised piece, the artist realised that watches can be any shape he can imagine – rather than the more conventional watches we see in the high street.

Although his watches are inspired by Manga, they certainly crossover as Steampunk Accessories. Haruo works mainly with brass and leather and explains that the older brass gets, the darker it becomes, lending his watches the look of strange and fascinating antiquities.
The timepieces are quite amazing and for anyone interested in Steampunk Jewelry, or simply great craftsmanship, they are well worth a look.

The Chicago based Artist, Nicrosin, has been making some amazing pieces that he calls “Chronomorphs”, all manner of Steampunk Jewelry and gadgets and gizmos. For me, the pièce de résistance is his “Mechanical Aural Communication Device” which is essentially a Steampunk Bluetooth Earpiece, made of watch parts and sculpey and lined with leather.
Sadly these fantastic Steampunk Accessories are non-functioning at the moment, but who knows what the future might bring?

I had never heard of the “Digesting Duck”, a mechanical animal that was said to be able to eat and digest grain and then defecate it.
Although a hoax, it was still impressive, if not slightly odd!
The Article also contains the infamous “Mechanical Turk”, a doll in Eastern dress who had its own intelligence and could play chess against human opponents.
It was only after the inventor’s death that the Turk was found to be an elaborate hoax.

This would make a great piece of Steampunk Jewelry or art, though at a $10K asking price, its a little out of my budget.
The owners are unwilling to tell how the Predator arrived which is a shame as it would be great to know who made this incredible piece of art!

The Corpus Clock is a stark reminder of our own mortality ticking away and even comes with a grasshopper sat atop, otherwise known as a ‘Chronophage’ or ‘time-eater’ – an amazing piece of work in its own right and very Steampunk!

The Clock has no hands and instead uses light to represent time as a wave coming from the centre of the universe. As well as being an artwork and functioning timepiece, the Clock is also a wonderfully ornate reminder of our own time ticking away, the Chronophage hungrily eating away at those passing seconds.

For anyone wishing to see this amazing, giant piece of Steampunk Jewelry, the Corpus Clock can be found at the Corpus Christi College in Cambridge, England.
