I’ve just created a new range of Steampunk Cufflinks and as I created them, I was thinking about the kinds of people that wear my cufflinks.

I know people getting married buy them (which is a real honor!) and as for the other customers, well I’m not so sure what walks of life they come from. Although I imagine they are known to say “Huzzah” and the like from time to time…

I love the idea that slowly and steadily, the world is becoming slightly more Steampunk and Sartorial. One step at a time with each pair of cufflinks which wings their way out of my shop, London Particulars.

It’s high time the world smartened up!

No more moping around in t-shirts and sloppily dressing for dinner.

It’s time to tidy up the Steampunk way!

I’ve mentioned before the idea of my Steampunk Cufflinks being worn in offices. Not only would this make a usually staid environment sparkle a little, I also see a further benefit… Imagine you’re at the water cooler, trying to get water (some people do) and the office bore approaches (every office has at least one) – by simply holding up your cuffs you can temporarily blind the bore with your shining cufflinks and make good your escape.

This is a far better distraction than a smoke bomb and far less conspicuous.

And there is the whole Transhumanist movement. These are people who readily pierce and prick themselves with all sorts of interesting body modifications. Noses, eyebrows and other more… private places. Why not wear Steampunk Cufflinks? Actually, perhaps surgically embedding cufflinks isn’t a good suggestion. Forget that…

Another area where I wouldn’t recommend my cufflinks is the military, at least not for operations under cover and in the theatre of conflict. The sun might shine on my cufflinks and give your position away, not a good idea…

But Sailors – Sailors would make ideal candidates for Steampunk Cufflinks. If you find yourself scuppered and out of flares, simply hold your cuffs up towards the mainland and anyone gazing out to sea is bound to see the flash of sunlight on Cufflink. These could be life savers…

As you may have noticed, I recently changed the theme of my Steampunk Jewelry blog. This is the third change since I set it up in 2008. My last theme, Gothic wasn’t a million miles from the new one, so I will forgive you if you don’t notice the changes! Gothic was a great theme in terms of being…gothic, but the theme’s functionality was limited and it was frustrating that my earlier posts weren’t being displayed. With a shock I noticed there are over a hundred and forty posts on this website since its inception!

So with the dawning of the New Year I decided to revamp my Steampunk Jewelry site and voila – here you have it, the all new look which might look a little like the old look! It’s very minimal and crisply white like a fall of wintry snow and I hope it will make my Jewelry photography stand out even more.

I often wonder about the types of people who buy my Steampunk Cufflinks! Whenever I send an order out to some exotic address (all addresses other than my own seem exotic) my mind is ablaze with questions. Things like where will the cufflinks end up, what sort of home, who wears them and in which types of situations?

I know a lot of the people who buy my cufflinks are purchasing them for their weddings; which is really rewarding! It’s a wonderful feeling to know people are wearing my jewelry on their big day.

I also wonder if my customers wear their cufflinks to work. I love the idea of a flash of Neo-Victorian jewelry at the water cooler or the photocopier.

Better still, perhaps there are Steampunk offices, where everything runs on clockwork and steam. I can imagine that such a place would be super productive, if a little noisy. On the downside, all that steam could wreak havoc with piles of paperwork but then again it might be good for pressing suits and shirts…

These are the irregular ramblings of someone shut away in a studio all day, fashioning Steampunk Jewelry with only cogs and gears for company. Now, back to work!

Elgin Steampunk Cufflinks

The Steampunk Cufflinks I sell in my Etsy shop, London Particulars, have been selling like hot cakes recently. Perhaps hot cakes is a poor analogy. I can’t remember the last time I bought a “hot cake”. OK, perhaps to rephrase, my cufflinks have been selling like very popular cakes of no fixed temperature.

I have so many different types of watch movements and each make has its own unique features but through working with vintage watch parts through the last couple of years, Elgin are definitely a favorite, they always seem to have the most exceptional gleam!

The Elgin watch company was created in eighteen sixty four at the end of the civil war and over the course of a hundred years, they made around sixty million watches. I’ve fashioned quite a few Steampunk Cufflinks, but going by that number, there are still a lot of vintage Elgin watch movements to hunt down…

I just created a new Steampunk Cufflinks Video over on my YouTube channel, showcasing some of the new and old designs from London Particulars.

Cufflinks are definitely one of my biggest selling items and I tried to capture just some of the variation and uniqueness of the vintage pieces which I use for my Watch Movement Cufflinks.

Finding matching pairs, especially perfectly matched pieces is always a bit of a treasure hunt and I have to search through hundreds of vintage watch movements so I can pair the pieces. I love the challenge and when you do find the perfect pair it really pays off, although having mismatched pairs can work too, as long as there is symmetry in the designs.

With Valentine’s Day coming, my focus for my Steampunk Jewelry is turning to cuff-links. Last year I found that cufflinks were a particularly hot item, the perfect gift to give your partner so that they may look truly steamy on the fourteenth of Feb!

This pair of perfectly paired Vintage Elgin Seventeen-Ruby Jeweled Watch Movements are set in a most unusual Oval Design with a pair of Silver Chrome-Plated Cuff links.

I just love the craftsmanship which Watchmakers used to employ in their work! I can’t see digital watches ever making such interesting and elegant jewelry.

The Steampunk Jewelry Cufflinks you see below are no ordinary cufflinks!
I’m afraid there is rather a dark story behind these “gleaming beauties”…a cautionary tale perhaps…
The Cufflinks were originally bought as a gift for her nephew, by a rather stout lady who went by the name of Henrietta Purloin (despite this most dishonest of names, I can vouch for her former fine standing).
As I ushered Mrs Purloin into my gallery to view the cufflinks, the poor lady turned as white as a sheet, swooned and in a trice was lying in a dusty heap upon the floor.
She was quite unconscious!
Eventually, with the aid of smelling salts and the jab of a needle, I managed to usher Mrs Purloin out into the rain, where I slapped her lumpy white face a few times, before she eventually came around.
Naturally, I was of the assumption that the sight of my most wonderful Steampunk Jewelry Cufflinks had caused the poor lady to faint at their wonder, but I was mistaken!
For as she passed into the gallery, she had caught a glimpse of the table I use to house my Steampunk Jewelry and I had gone and left one of the table-legs bare! The scandal!
Please let this misfortunate tale serve as a warning to you, my esteemed friend, cover your table legs at all times.
The last I heard from poor, insane Henrietta Purloin, she was cloistered away in the infernal labyrinths of Bedlam that much maligned madhouse!
I am truly sorry if this tale has darkened your day and as some small consolation, I have posted a picture of the wondrous cufflinks, table legs strictly out of frame…

These wonderful Steampunk Cufflinks have a stranger history than most!
The watch parts themselves were made by a very odd gentleman.
He turned up at my shoppe one miserable grey, sopping wet October afternoon and presented me with his jewelry, cogs and watch movements – I’d never seen such splendour before!
“How much for these fine pieces?” I asked and the strange man said nothing. Instead he pointed at a puddle in the yard outside my window.
“You want a puddle?” I asked. He nodded and thanking my good fortune, I at once accepted his peculiar request.
Off he went, and picked up the puddle from the yard as if it were nothing more than a plate and sloped off and was soon lost in the rain.
Its only now, that I wonder what the value of the puddle could be, and the strange, deep black space left behind in my yard causes me the most sleepless of nights.
So buy these exquisite cufflinks now while you can, for I wonder if the hole where the puddle lay might not grow and take myself and my Shoppe away with it.

Its almost November and Christmas is right around the corner, can you believe how 2008 has flown by?
For me, the holidays have always been a creative time when I look forward to giving my wild creations to family and friends.
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been very busy gathering supplies and I’m about to start creating new Steampunk jewelry designs for the holiday season but at this time when there is so much to be done, I keep finding myself distracted by all the amazing techniques and tutorials that are available these days…one that has really sparked my imagination is metal etching!
Mmm… it involves bubbling acid and can help me to feel like a mad scientist, can you get more Steampunk than that?
I’m really hoping that I’ll find the time to try some of these new ideas soon, and achieving some aesthetically pleasing results in time for Christmas would be a big plus…now where did I put my goggles?
