Its almost November and Christmas is right around the corner, can you believe how 2008 has flown by?
For me, the holidays have always been a creative time when I look forward to giving my wild creations to family and friends.
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been very busy gathering supplies and I’m about to start creating new Steampunk Jewelry designs for the holiday season but at this time when there is so much to be done, I keep finding myself distracted by all the amazing techniques and tutorials that are available these days…one that has really sparked my imagination is metal etching!
Mmm… it involves bubbling acid and can help me to feel like a mad scientist, can you get more Steampunk than that?
I’m really hoping that I’ll find the time to try some of these new ideas soon, and achieving some aesthetically pleasing results in time for Christmas would be a big plus…now where did I put my goggles?

I just found a great interview with Jake von Slatt (also known as Sean Slattery) of steampunkworkshop.com.
I love the quote where Sean describes Steampunk: “I like to call it the intersection of technology and romance, it’s a way of injecting some humanity back into modern life,”
I think that’s so true, there is a dark romance to Steampunk; it is a fantastical aside from our modern world of bland, mass-produced technology.
I try to achieve the same feelings with my Steampunk Jewelry and I hope my work stands out a little and conjures up impressions of somewhere else a little removed from the twenty-second century.

In the construction and creation of Steampunk Jewelry or any form of jewelry making, you may find yourself perplexed by the wide range of ways to connect your precious pieces.
Fear not, there is a great site called This To That which will give you the best adhesive to glue…you guessed it…this to that!
Be it leather, glass or metal…paper, plastic or wood, just plug in your materials and click on the Let’s Glue tab and presto!
You also get the best options for your materials as well as helpful hints and explanations as to the choice of adhesive.

Finding great tools to work with when making something is, in my mind, essential. Perhaps one of the least (or perhaps MOST?) obvious tools, when making Steampunk Jewelry is a pair of watchmaker’s tweezers.
Tweezers are tweezer you might say…but this is just not so!
The main problem that crops up is this; tweezers made of ferrous metals or alloys can become magnetized making precision placement of the tiny metallic elements a time consuming and aggravating task, at best.
Solution, you guessed it, watchmaker’s tweezers!
Luckily these day finding what we need online is a fairly quick and simple task and many jewelry suppliers stock essential tools so when you are browsing their catalogue, for Vern’s sakes don’t just gloss over the humble tweezer section!
Fantastic Contraptions
This does not really fit into the genre of Steampunk Jewelry but I think it’s worth taking a close look at the amazing imagination, artistry and skill of Stephane Halleux. The artistry, which has gone into these pieces, is wholly inspiring to me.
His work takes you immediately into another world, his characters and creations surely have a life of there own… somewhere and I wish I could take a peek into that imaginary universe!

I pledge allegiance!
This Post is slightly off the topic of Steampunk Jewelry but there is a really great online movement called the Handmade Pledge and I am keen to spread the word.
In the most basic of explanations, you can take an online pledge to give handmade and request that others do the same for you.
Taking the time and effort required for giving handmade is an idea that fits snugly into the Steampunk genre where most thing are DIY and the Handmade Pledge promotes fantastic sites like Etsy where artists and craftspeople can sell their own handcrafted items online.
I think the thing that I like most about the Handmade Pledge is that its taking a stand in the corner of the handmade, creative and the unique, stating that there is value there, and of course that is something we can all forget amid the daily bombardment from corporations, advertisers and brands.
A Steampunk Dalek!
Again, I digress from making Steampunk Jewelry to enjoy well made distractions!
